Start a Sleep Out
Start a Sleep Out
There are three easy steps to create a Sleep Out. Watch our video tutorial or use the checklist below. For questions on any step, email sleepout@covenanthouse.org.
-
1. Register your event.
You can Sleep Out anywhere at any time, on your own or with your friends, family, company, school, or community group. Register here to receive your planning kit, which contains everything you need to create a meaningful experience.
-
2. Fundraise and spread awareness.
When you register, you create a personal fundraising page that you can customize with a photo, story, and fundraising goal. You can then share your personal URL with your network so they can donate directly on this page.
Tip: if you’re planning to Sleep Out with a group, opt to start a team on your registration form. You can customize this page with your group name and share the “Join My Team” link when you invite people to Sleep Out with you.
Never fundraised before? Don't worry. Our fundraising tools include an easy guide to getting started, sample messages, and shareable content. You will also have access to a fundraising coach, who can help you navigate a fundraising strategy.
We do require a self-donation during registration, which counts towards your Sleep Out goal. This also helps demonstrate your commitment to the cause to your future donors, who will see your name on the donation wall. From there, you can set a fundraising goal that feels comfortable (you can raise or lower it at any time).
If you are registered in a state or province where Covenant House is located, the funds you raised will benefit young people locally in your community. If you are not near one of our Houses, the funds you raise are directed to the House where they are most needed as well as support Covenant House International's advocacy work to address the systemic causes of youth homelessness.

3. Sleep Out.
Find a place to Sleep Out that is safe and legal. It can be anywhere: a yard, garage, porch, terrace, or floor are all great options. The important piece is thinking about what comforts you will give up for the night. Your bed, of course, but also consider going without a pillow or blanket, comfy pajamas, or your usual nighttime rituals.
Remember, Sleep Out is about much more than an uncomfortable night’s sleep. Your planning toolkit will include activity ideas, videos, and stories that you can incorporate into your night to give it added meaning and make you a better advocate for youth overcoming homelessness. If you’re with a group, consider giving out creative fundraising awards to recognize people who went above and beyond.
As you settle in for the night, be sure to snap a couple photos and tag them on social media with #chsleepout so we can wish you well. And when you wake up, take time to reflect on the experience and how it differs from what youth facing homelessness experience. If you’re with a group, share out loud together and then share your thoughts on social media so your donors and followers can hear, too.
Our team would love to hear from you, too, with photos and reflections on your Sleep Out. Reach out to us at sleepout@covneanthouse.org.
