Activities

The Sleep Out is a meaningful experience that can help you become more aware of what young people overcoming homelessness face. But apart from the “Sleeping Out”, what do you do all night? Below are activity ideas to help you plan your Sleep Out.

Remember, on April 24, you can also join a national livestream to hear from youth and front-line staff at Covenant House shelters across the country. There will be interactive activities, fundraising prizes, and special guests. Check the Virtual Sleep Out page for the complete schedule.

Stats Crafts

At Covenant House, we have gathered a lot of data about homeless kids – you can find it on our website. But looking at data doesn’t always make the problem real or tangible for people – and art can help. Gather poster boards and arts-and-crafts supplies. Choose an issue, a statistic or piece of information and create a poster that “brings it to life”. Post a picture online to share with your friends and family or display your works in a window to share with people passing by.

Conversation Starters

What is your perception of homelessness? Is that different from the perceptions your friends and classmates and family have? How can you know for sure? Discuss the questions below with your Sleep Out team. Then, watch a video or two from our video library that features the stories of youth at Covenant House. Come back together to discuss what you watched and how your answers may have changed:

  • What does the word "homeless" mean to you?
  • What do you think of "homeless people"? How about homeless kids?
  • What makes your house a home?
  • What things do your parents or siblings do to help you overcome challenges? What things do you do to help them? How does it feel to have that kind of support?
Check back here soon! More activity ideas will be added before the Sleep Out.
