How It Works

Join or Start a Sleep Out

Sleep Out events are hosted at local Covenant Houses across the U.S. and Canada as well as virtually for participants around the world. Find an upcoming events here and complete the registration process to join.

You can also host your own Sleep Out: anytime, anywhere, and with anyone. Register here to receive your Sleep Out planning kit, which contains everything you need to create a meaningful experience.

You can Sleep Out by yourself or get your friends, family, and co-workers involved and register as part of a team.

Fundraise and spread awareness

When you register, you will create a personal fundraising page that you can customize with a photo, story, and fundraising goal. You can then share your personal URL with your network so they can donate directly on this page.

Never fundraised before? Don't worry. Our fundraising tools include an easy guide to getting started, sample messages, and shareable content. You will also have access to a fundraising coach, who can help you navigate a fundraising strategy.

Sleep Outs may have a required minimum fundraising goal, so please review the event information. If you are creating your own Sleep Out, there is a required self-donation (don't worry, it counts towards your goal, which you can set wherever you feel comfortable!).

If you are registered in a state or province where Covenant House is located, the funds you raised will benefit young people locally in your community. If you are not near one of our Houses, the funds you raise are directed to the House where they are most needed. These funds also support Covenant House International's advocacy work to address the systemic causes of youth homelessness.

Give up your bed for one night

Sleep Outs hosted by Covenant House include a program where Sleepers will dive deeper into our mission, hear from youth, alumni, and front-line staff about the impact of your efforts, and engage in meaningful conversation with each other.

Until further notice or unless specified, all of these programs will be held virtually, so participants can tune in from anywhere.

When you participate virtually or create your own Sleep Out, you will find a safe and legal space to spend the night. It can be anywhere: a yard, garage, porch, terrace, or floor are all great options. The important piece is thinking about what comforts you will give up for the night. Your bed, of course, but also consider going without a pillow or blanket, comfy pajamas, or your usual nighttime rituals.

Remember, Sleep Out is about much more than an uncomfortable night’s sleep. If you are creating your own Sleep Out, review the resource center and select activities to participate in, stories to read or watch, and other ways to engage in education or advocacy that night.

In the morning, we encourage you to join or host a morning reflection to talk through your experience, how it differs from what youth facing homelessness experience, and ways you can stay engaged in the movement to end youth homelessness.
