I'm Sleeping Out

I have accepted Covenant House’s challenge to spend a night sleeping on the street so homeless kids don’t have to.  Together we can work together to provide a safe and loving place for our New Jersey homeless youth to call home.  The homeless youth begin the process of healing and living in the present moment allowing them to love, be loved, trust again, and be open to all the goodness that life has to offer them.

Our kids at Covenant House are the forgotten ones, thrown away like trash when they turn 18.  The checks stop coming in and they are told to leave.  In many cases, they were already abused in a variety of ways.  They were told "I love you",  and then betrayed in a second.  Our kids coming in find out that they are worthy of love, respected, honored and can actually dream to have a future. A LIFE!  They don't know what they don't know.  Covenant House has a program in place to move these young people from Homelessness to Independence.

A young person coming into Covenant House NJ is treated with absolute respect and unconditional love and to stabilize their Crisis and assist them in transitioning to a stable living environment where they can continue to pursue their life goals and aspirations.  Some of the youth are so uncomfortable with unconditional love, kindness, being respected and cannot believe someone actually cares that they leave Covenant House to live back on the streets.  However, in most cases, they come back and they are ready and open to healing and happiness.  For the most part, they do not think they are worthy to be loved and guided to a journey of new beginnings.  When that "AHA" moment happens, you can see the light surrounding their whole being, the youth eyes are lit up with the excitement of living, loving life, hopes, dreams, and a future.

The Sleep Out is not about pretending to be homeless. It’s an act of solidarity with the 4.2 million young people who experience homelessness each year. It’s a decision that we can’t stay indoors while so many kids remain outside.

One night can make a difference.

As part of my Sleep Out, I am raising funds and awareness for Covenant House, a shelter for kids experiencing homelessness and trafficking. Covenant House offers these young people so much more than a safe place to sleep - they welcome each kid with absolute respect and unconditional love, and their continuum of care provides essential services to help kids transition from homelessness to independence.
