Why Sleep Out?

Hundreds of young people come to Covenant House Michigan each year seeking safe shelter, nourishing food, clean clothing, and essential services like job training, education, healthcare, mental health counseling, and legal aid. You can support our youth on their journeys to independence by participating in Sleep Out in solidarity with our young people. The funds you raise help Covenant House Michigan provide 24/7 care. And the awareness you raise shines light on the youth homelessness crisis, urging us closer to a world where everyone has a safe place to sleep.

SLEEP OUT IN SOLIDARITY WITH YOUTH FACING HOMELESSNESS

As we approach our second Sleep Out during a global pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to move this event to a virtual platform. Sleepers will now have the opportunity to participate virtually from anywhere, to raise funds for youth facing homelessness in Michigan. Sleepers will be invited to participate in a live, interactive online program with Covenant House alumni, front-line staff, and fellow Sleepers from across the globe. At night, these Sleepers will give up their beds and Sleep Out in backyards, garages, porches, terraces, and floors across Michigan. We are also encouraging companies, churches and community groups to Sleep Out (safely) together, providing community and solidarity to our youth.

As in years past, Sleep Out: Executive Edition Michigan brings together Sleepers who commit to a fundraising goal of at least $5,000 to help our residents. That amount alone provides 90 hours of Outreach work on the streets of Detroit and Grand Rapids. A Sleeper who raised $7,500 provides 150 young people with interview clothes and supplies so they can get and retain a job. And, $10,000 raised provides mental health screening for every youth in our Emergency Crisis Shelters.

Companies participating in Sleep Out can offer employees across the state or around the world the choice to Sleep Out at a Covenant House-sponsored location or remotely. Both options provide opportunities for meaningful engagement with your team. Contact Ida Benson below with any questions.
