For 30 years, Covenant House has offered a lifeline for at-risk and homeless youth, recognizing their inherent goodness and boundless potential. When a young person comes to our shelter, we address their immediate needs first – warm meals, showers, safe beds. But we don't stop at offering an immediate safe harbor. We strive to move each young person forward down a path to independent adulthood, free from the risk of homelessness.
We are guided by 5 principles:
In crisis, needing life’s basics of food, clothing and shelter, the kids come to Covenant House day and night and are accepted without question or cost.
We offer kids protection from the streets and from their pasts. We stress the reality of the present moment, and encourage belief in their potential for the future.
Lasting, caring relationships are built on trust, respect and honesty. We teach our kids that the “values” of street life are destructive.
Stability is unknown on the streets. We offer kids guidelines, plans and options, not rules and regulations that will impede them.
Change, freely chosen, brings the surest progress. We assist our kids in making positive decisions about their future.
