Frequently Asked Questions

How does Covenant House help homeless kids?
Covenant House was founded in 1972 to serve homeless youth, with absolute respect and unconditional love. Today, with sites in more than 30 cities, we are the largest privately funded agency in the Americas providing food, shelter, crisis care, and essential services to homeless young people. But we go beyond offering an immediate safe harbor. We encourage each young person to move forward along a path to independent adulthood, free from the risk of homelessness. Where does the money for Sleep Out go?
Covenant House puts the money Sleep Out participants raise to work right away. It helps keep the lights on and the doors open for the thousands of young people who will come to our shelters this year. Once we meet a young person’s immediate needs, Covenant House offers an individualized development plan for self-sufficiency and independent adulthood. Sleep Out participants help fund all of these vital services, such as medical care, legal assistance, education opportunities, vocational training and therapeutic services. Is Sleep Out safe?
Safety is our first and foremost concern whether, it is for the young people we serve or for supporters at events. For Sleep Outs held at our sites, we take all necessary precautions to ensure you are safe. And while the spirit of the event is to sleep outside, we make indoor space available overnight if needed. We urge Sleep Out America participants to only Sleep Out in a space that is safe and legal, even if it is indoors (e.g. on the floor or in a covered porch).

How can I participate in Sleep Out?
Sleep Out events are held at Covenant House sites in the United States and Canada. You can also Sleep Out anywhere with anyone you choose through Sleep Out America. Find the Sleep Out event that’s right for you.

Someone invited me to join their Sleep Out team. How do I do that?
Search for their name in the Fundraiser Search box at the top of the page. When you get to their page, click the “Join Team” button and complete the registration process to join the event.

You can also search for a Sleep Out by location.

Can I create a Sleep Out team?
Yes! when you complete the registration form, select the option to "Create a Team." Once finished, share the link to your page and invite your friends, family, or coworkers to join. All team members must register and create their own fundraising page.

For Sleep Out events held at Covenant House sites, the same eligibility requirements apply for members of teams as they do for individual participants of the event. Teams will also be asked to set a minimum fundraising goal that is equal to the number of team members multiplied by the individual fundraising commitment. For example, if individuals are asked to raise $1,000, a team of 3 must commit to raise at least $3,000 (3 x $1,000).

We recommend limiting your team to no more than 7 people, to help keep the Captain’s responsibilities more manageable. If you have more than 7 team members, consider splitting into two teams and selecting a co-captain!
